Section G: Walker Pass to Crabtree Meadows

From Walker Pass, State Route 178, northbound

To Joshua Tree Spring. Downhill on right. (0.25 mi SW)

To Branch of Spanish Needle Creek

• This area can be very confusing. In effect, you cross the bottom two branches of Needle Creek which were dry this year, swing around on a long climbing switchback then re-cross those two creek branches. (Never mind that technically there may be different named creeks involved.) There was a trickle of water at what would be the fourth crossing. 6/04/04. Chance

To Chimney Creek (just before Canebrake Road)

• South-bound horsemen told me they found Fox Mill spring running. I did not get that far. (If the trough is empty and the pipe isn't producing, go through the willows to a clear running stream). 7/29/04. Wandering Bob

To First creek crossing at Rockhouse Basin (the one you will see on your right, down in the valley

• 1) Dry at the crossing. Some water was available upstream near where the PCT leaves the creek after crossing it, or downstream. This will probably dry up completely soon.6/10/04. Hikers at Kennedy Mdws
  

• 2) On long flat stretches, the creek disappears into the sand so the creek looks dry. Check upstream or down stream, especially at little rock outcroppings. Found plenty of water there. 6/06/04. Chance

• 2) Trail follows now flowing creek and crosses it a couple of times
  

• 3) At the middle crossing there will be a 4x4 post on the left, almost in the creek. The trail looks like it continues straight ahead but this is a dead end spur. Turn left at post. Trail continues to cross creek several more times to the top of the climb. Water at top of climb. 6/11/04. Chance

To Editors Note:

• From Chicken Spring Lake to Kennedy Canyon Creek water is no longer a survival issue. The focus through the Sierra Nevada will be on trail inventory of interest to hikers without specific reference to water. The problem now is learning how to safely cross snowmelt filled rivers as well as safely walk on rotten snow. Good Luck!
