Muir Trail Ranch is a backcountry resort located just north of Kings Canyon National Park in the Sierra Nevada, near Florence Lake. It is only a few miles (12?) south of Vermillion Valley Resort. Generally, their focus is spent on guests that rent the resort for a week or more. Accomodations for hikers are usually not available on the spot, but with reservations,
short stays are possible.
So why do we care? Well, they do accept hiker packages. Practically though, they're often not open by the time thru-hikers pass through the region. Be very careful not to send a package you won't be able to get! For that reason, few hikers send packages there. And, it costs $40 for them to hold your package. And, it must be sent in a paint bucket. If you're interested, check out their
resupply page. Other services, if they're even open, are scant. They have a tiny store. Mostly sunscreen, bug spray and maybe batteries. Refunds for packages are not available. Further information can be found on their
backpacker page.
Many John Muir Trail hikers use MTR as a resupply. But they generally are later in the season than PCT thru-hikers. If it's available, it's a nice option because it shortens the long hual from Kennedy Meadows South to Vermillion Valley Resort (if you're not resupplying in Independence.
