Gear, what a loaded subject. Generally, this page is to outline equipment used in a conventional long distance hike. The subject is so large, the gear possibilites and combinations are endless. So keep it general. Mostly links to outside sources for further detail. Endless drivel can commence below the dotted line.
Equipment Styles
Backpack kits are generally talked about in terms of baseweights. That refers to the pack equipment only, minus consumables such as food, fuel and water. We talk about the gear in the pack, which does not include the gear warn on a typical (good weather) day.
Super Ultralight (SUL)
SUL weights range from 0 to 6 pounds.
Ultralight
Somewhere from 7 pounds to 12 pounds.
Lightweight
From 13 pounds to 22 pounds
Conventional Weight
Twenty three pounds baseweight would be light for conventional, but from there, up through about 45 pounds.
Oh boy, that's heavy
Don't kid yourself. 50 pounds of baseweight in absurd.
