Campo is the first town on the PCT, located less than a mile from the border fence. You'll pass through Campo at least twice. First going to the southern terminus, then again as you walk north. While a border town, there isn't a border crossing. So it's a sleepy little town, marked by it's proximity to Mexico, a huge Border Patrol Station, the terminus to this long trail with a fair amount of history. history. It is also home to a train museum, the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum.

Most people stay in San Diego, where there are many hotels. Campo has no hotels. Camping this close to the border can be sketchy. Relatively safe however, is camping behind the store. With permission, this is a common hiker practice. It's free.

Campo Diner: Decent greasy spoon Americana. Perfect spot for breakfast before you hit the trail. Good Starbucks coffee too.
